Piggeries included in this study were small and in poor sanitary conditions, are unfortunately common in the area and contribute to the contamination of the environment with parasites. Pigs are usually housed next to residences with pigs having close contact with humans, including children, and other animals such as dogs, cats, chickens, and rats during the night. There is little or no insect control. Feed consists of a mixture of food waste obtained from local restaurants heated with water to reach boiling. This food mixture is known as “lavagem” and it is very popular among these small producers. No commercial ration is provided. Treated water is obtained from a public water supplier but it is not potable. This kind of production is very common in small towns in Brazil, and it may consist of only a few pigs for the owners' personal consumption or to supply the local market. Many of these producers may not be recorded in the official government statistical data and the animals are clandestinely slaughtered [84], [85] and [86].
