Sunflower cooking oil (500 ml) was heated in a pot to 300 8C
and then removed from the heat and temperature measurements
recorded for 90 min.
Additional experiments were conducted by measuring the
cooling of black coffee in an insulated mug (250 ml) and boiled
water (1000 ml) in a stainless steel kettle for 180 min.
For the final part of the study an Americano (black coffee), a
cappuccino, a latte and a soya latte were purchased from a high
street coffee house. The drinks were served in cardboard cups
and the lids left in place to simulate take-away drinking habits.
The thermometer probe was passed through the drinking hole
intheplastic lid(Fig.3) andtemperatures recordedeveryminute
up to 15 min and every 5 min until 90 min. The temperature
readings commenced immediately and were carried out within
the high street coffee house to ensure heat was not dissipated
while transporting the beverages tothedomestic kitchen where
the other experiments were conducted.
Three time points were chosen to enable comparison of
results, namely the time taken for each liquid to reach 70 8C,
60 8C and 53 8C.
