As reported, research has shown the development of spelling ability in
typical populations requires knowledge and skill across the areas of phonology,
morphology, orthography, and formation of MGRs. To date, however, there is
little information available about how these factors interact and contribute to the
spelling abilities of persons who are nonverbal due to SSPIs. General findings
that have been reported for this population regarding the relationship between
phonological and morphological awareness and spelling abilities have found
these relationships to be somewhat different from what has been found in typical
populations (Dahlgren Sandberg, 2001; Redmond & Johnston, 2001). More
