CPG can emerge from uncertainty about the appropriateness
of procedure, from evidence that they
are effective in improving patient outcomes or from
the need to conserve resources in providing care
(Shhekelle et al., 1999), and can be developed for
a wide range of clinical areas or procedures. In a
critical care setting, one of the main reasons for
admitting patients to an intensive care unit (ICU) is
to receive ventilatory support. Mechanical ventilation
is required to preserve life, improve symptoms
and reduce the complications of respiratory failure.
However, it can result in a variety of complications
of its own, some of which can be life threatening. A
nursing case-management plan based on CPG about
a patient’s specific problems is therefore necessary
