The first human case was observed in Southern
Cameroon by Blanche et al.,1 in 1961. In 1963,
Martinson published several additional cases from
Nigeria.2 In 1965, Renoirte et al.3 from Congo,
and Brass,4 from Jamaica, reported for the first
time the isolation of the fungus from human cases. According to Fromentin and Ravisse,5 and Ader
and Dodd,6 an extensive review of the world lit
erature until 1977 revealed 55 reported cases. In
1978 Kamalam and Thambiah reported an addi
tional case from India.7 Most of the reported cases are from Nigeria,H~"' Cameroon,11-12 the Ivory
Coast,13 Zaire,14'15 and India.16"18 In Latin Amer
ica only five cases have been documented
