Earlier this week, the first sexually transmitted case of Zika virus was reported in the U.S. And today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning: Pregnant women should not have sex—or should use condoms if they do—with men who live in or have travelled to areas of active Zika transmission for the remainder of their pregnancies. The CDC also advised pregnant women to discuss their dude's potential exposure to the virus with their doctor.
Why the guidelines? The Zika virus could be seriously dangerous for pregnant women and their babies, as it can lead to the development of microcephaly, a condition that causes a baby's head and brain to be smaller than normal.
