PROBLEM/BACKGROUND: The optimal technique of performing stabilization, arthrodesis, and alignment of a cervical spine after discectomy with neural decompression in degenerative disease has yet to be determined.
OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of anterior cervical discectomy and short segment (≤ 2 level) arthrodesis for degenerative disease with or without anterior plate stabilization.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A retrospective analytic study.
SETTING: Somdejphrajaotaksinmaharaj Hospital, Tak Province.
MATERIALS and METHOD: Medical records of patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and short segment arthrodesis for degenerative disease performed both with and without anterior cervical plate stabilization from the year 2004 to 2007 were reviewed. The patients were categorized into two groups, short segment (≤ 2 levels) fusion with bone graft alone and with cervical plate stabilization. The demographic data and disease characteristic were recorded. The results after surgery, especially early and delay postoperative complications were compared. The data was analyzed by Pearson chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, independent sample t test and presented in frequency and percentage, with significant level at 0.05.
RESULTS: Forty eight patients receiving anterior discectomy and cervical arthrodesis were included. Short segment (≤ 2 level) anterior cervical fusion with bone graft alone had significantly more graft related complications than another group with anterior cervical plate stabilization (p < 0.001).
CONCLUSION: Addition of anterior cervical plate can reduce bone graft complications in short segment cervical arthrodesis.
