Use of the 856 versus 956 MARC Tag
The 856 field is to be used for resources whose URLs are accessible to a wide variety of users (a journal index, an electronic journal, or a freely accessible Web page, for example) and that the cataloger would include in cataloging sent for inclusion in a national database such as OCLC. The important criterion is that the URL would be the same for any user, or in the case of a subscription, would be the same for any library with a subscription to the resource.
The 956 field is to be used when the URL would not otherwise be included in cataloging sent to a national database. Some examples include a CD-ROM loaded onto a specific public computer or group of computers in a library, locally created resources, and databases that are only available at IU or in a specific library, or a local ERL server for Silver Platter products whose URL would only WORKwithin IU or a particular IU campus.
