Recovery Area at Curbed Intersections. When a through lane becomes a right-turnonly
lane at a curbed intersection, an opposite-side tapered recovery area should be
considered. The taper should be long enough to allow a trapped vehicle to escape, but
not so long as to appear like a merging lane. Taper lengths may vary from 200 to 250 ft
(61 to 76 m) depending on design speed.
