Treatment Goals
› Provide Supportive Pre- and Posttreatment Care and Reduce Risk of Complications
• Monitor vital signs, assess all physiologic systems, and assess for pain/discomfort; provide analgesia, as ordered
• Follow facility pre- and posttreatment protocols if patient becomes a candidate for surgical intervention (e.g., unilateral
or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, surgical debulking of the tumor), chemotherapy for advanced or recurrent disease, or
radiation therapy for advanced or recurrent disease
–Reinforce pre- and posttreatment education and verify completion of facility informed consent documents
–Closely monitor patients for complications following treatment
• Administer hormone replacement therapy, as ordered; monitor for adverse effects
–Consult a drug information resource for a complete listing of adverse effects
› Provide Emotional Support and Educate
• Assess anxiety level and coping ability; provide emotional support, educate, and encourage discussion about SLCT-O,
potential complications (e.g., infertility), treatment risks and benefits, and individualized prognosis
• Request referral, if appropriate, to a
–mental health clinician for counseling and support in coping with altered body image, loss of fertility, and/or being
diagnosed with cancer
–social worker for identification of local resources for support groups, in-home care, educational programs/information
sources, and/or hospice
