1.Establishing inclusion: Creating a learning atmosphere in which students and teachers
feel respected and connected to one another (e.g., community, climate, ownership)
2.Developing attitude: Creating a favorable disposition toward the learning experience
through personal relevance and choice (e.g., affect, interest, awareness, attention, enthusiasm)
3.Enhancing meaning: Creating challenging, thoughtful learning experiences that include
students’ perspectives and values (e.g., relevance)
4.Engendering competence: Creating an understanding that students are effective in
learning something they value (e.g., empowerment, confidence, expectancy)
These four conditions work in concert and they exert their influence on student
motivation for learning in the moment and over time. Following this model, teachers can
plan how to establish and coordinate these conditions in their classes and can also
integrate motivational planning with instructional planning.
