Pursuing the arts is second nature to India-born jewellery designer Mahak Kala. Growing up in a family of gemstone traders, Kala had a significant head start on the trade and wasted no time in honing his innate artistic talents.
After completing a graduate diamonds programme from the Gemological Institute of America in New York, he immediately obtained a diploma in jewellery design and took a six-month jewellery manufacturing course in Carlsbad, California. He then moved to Hong Kong and enrolled at the Savannah College of Arts and Design.
In a talk with JNA, Kala shared his design philosophy and his view of the ever-evolving world of jewellery design.
JNA: Tell us about your creations.
Mahak Kala: I like geometrical shapes; I work with complete squares or circles. I usually start with the earrings and work my way to the bracelet, necklace and ring. Once I start designing, it’s a continuous flow. My three main collections so far are Checkresque, Cerce and the Bullet Line or B n D. The bullet-shaped coloured gemstones are interchangeable and can be worn as studs. It gives the wearer the freedom to make the jewellery piece personal and multi-functional. You get to choose how you want to wear it.
