Linpac Packaging has joined forces with performance additives supplier Addmaster to develop a range of trays and films with built-in antimicrobial technology to reduce growth of bacteria on fresh meat's outer packaging.
Addmaster's Biomaster antimicrobial technology is a silver-based additive that can be added into any plastic, paper, textile, paint or coating product, and does not affect product functionality or the food's organoleptic properties such as taste and smell.
The products treated with the new technology are said to have reduced the growth of Campylobacter on their surface by up to 99.99%.
Both the companies have collaborated to create a technically-advanced range of tray and lidding film solutions which incorporate Biomaster additives.
Linpac Packaging director of innovation Alan Davey said its partnership with Addmaster addresses concerns raised by its customers, while helping them to reduce the chances of bacterial growth on the outer packaging of fresh meat products in the stages between farm and fork.
"Linpac Packaging is committed to helping its customers deliver safer food products by bringing together innovation and technology to develop high quality packaging solutions," Davey added.
According to the multi-material packaging manufacturer Linpac, the collaboration aims to create a range of packaging which is safe and cost-effective.
The entire supply chain is concerned about the contamination from harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella, E.coli and Campylobacter, which is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK.
The risk to consumers from the poisonous bacteria can be reduced by preventing cross-contamination during preparation, processing, packing and distribution, Linpac said.
