Physiological variables
Physiological variables refer to the body structure and function
of the nurse that serve to protect the body and foster
resilience through homeostasis. As basic system structures,
humans have a nonspecific response to stress that tends to
occur in four stages: alarm, resistance, exhaustion, adjustment
and healing (Sitzman, & Eichelberger, 2011).
Physiological responses to stress are associated with the
sympathetic fight or flight system, which produces
