Description
The water dragon is in reality a kind of lizard living in the South of Yunnan and now has the status of a protected species. The little lizard is behind the annual water splash festival.
Dragons are rain makers in the Chinese mythology. And thus the rural people of Yunnan used to pray for rain on April 8 of the Chinese lunar calendar for rain and a good harvest. When one year they rain did not come, they placed small statues of Buddha into the fields and they rain came. And in memory of this event, people celebrate the rain festival every year.
