CONCLUSIONS
Lack of insight and poor treatment compliance
are common features in schizophrenia
that have a major impact on
treatment, course and outcome. Since
the suhjective perceptions and evaluations
of persons with schizophrenia are
essential for their cooperation in services,
MI is an effective therapeutic approach;
it explores the personal goals of
individuals and allows them to develop
their readiness for participating more
actively in the treatment. This readiness
can he a first step towards a suecesshji
cooperation in treatment, although
often other support such as skills training
will be needed in order to teach the
skills that are necessar)' to achieve the
identified goals, in addition, MI can,
with certain modifications, overcome
ohstaeles specific to schizophrenia such
as cognitive deficits, negative symptoms
with associated motivational prohlems,
and the psychological coping mechanism
of denying one's illness. Further
empirical research to study the efficacy
of Ml, and further development of suitahle
measures of insight, is needed
