There are definitely icons of post-modern architecture, which stand out amongst the buildings of London. The first that springs to mind is the building commonly known as “The Gherkin” which has transformed the London Skyline and is fast becoming a new symbol of contemporary London. While London is definitely not known for its skyscrapers, they provide a good medium to translate the ideals of postmodernism to a greater audience and a post-modern structure such as the gherkin provides a very definitive juxtaposition against the modernist structures which dominate the London skyline, such as those in canary wharf. The building features many postmodern features, for example it attacks the very straight, square, “footprint” modernist skyscrapers. The building shape serves a multitude of functions; maximizes public space at ground level, reduces the amount of wind deflected, reflections are reduced and the shape creates natural ventilation within the building; uniting the form and the function of the building.
