effective to do many small trials to familiarize the researcher with its growth
and management [Huxley, 1988]. Observational trials can be used to document
phenology or identify compatible intercrops. Simple experiments can
be used to identify management characteristics, such as effective germination
techniques or coppicing response, or the effect of site conditions on early
growth. Superimposed experiments on existing trees can also be used to
explore response to different management treatments. By carrying out such
trials in farmers' fields or communities, or under their management, early
farmer evaluation and design preferences can be obtained.
