This study shows that the administration of AFB significantly
reduced body weight gain and adipose tissue mass, and improved
serum triacylglycerol, glucose, insulin, and HDL-cholesterol
levels in high fat diet obese mice. This cereal bar
did not cause alteration in the serum AST, ALT and creatinine
markers so that the cereal bar did not pose any toxicity in the
liver and kidney tissues. Anti-obesity and hypolipidemic effects
of AFB were associated with the increase of serum
adiponectin level and up-regulation of mRNA expression of
PPAR-c, UCP-2 and b3-AR in visceral adipose tissue. Hence,
the AF cereal bar being nontoxic and having a variety of nutritional
components may potentially serve as nutraceutical for
improvement of obesity and metabolic disorders
