Sustainable tourism in Croatia is created through the development of sustainable tourist products for accommodations. Drawing a
comparison with key business activity benchmarks according to Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI) an
estimation of a particular tourist product is possible as to its: usefulness in satisfying the needs of the tourist and of the host, the amount of
profit it produces, the number of people it employs and the manner in which it protects the host’s natural and cultural heritage; in other words,
does it have a long-term sustainability.
Unsustainable tourism in Croatia is the making of massive production of unsustainable tourist products, such as accommodation
in Bed & Breakfast Household facilities as a bad practice.
An analysis of the structure of Croatia’s lodging capacities and an estimation of sustainable and unsustainable tourist products in
tourist accommodation show a growth in the trend towards unsustainable tourist products and a fall in sustainable tourist products such as
Hotel lodgings.
In order to make Croatian tourism become a segment of European sustainable tourism it is necessary to accept European hotel
standards in Croatia, instead of the existing ones that are more elevated and unlike. Needlessly different hotel standards in Croatia favor the
development of unsustainable tourist lodging products in Bed & Breakfast Households. The sustainability of tourism in Croatia and EU must
be measured and benchmarked in accordance with the interest of the host community in any kind of basic tourist product at the destination.
Sustainable tourism in Croatia can be significantly boosted by a conversion of existing Bed & Breakfast households into hotel
facilities, after an acceptance of the same European hotel standards. By that means there would be a substantial reduction of the number and
quality of the existing unsustainable, supplementary, unprofessional and largest Croatian lodging product in the B&B Household and its
replacement with a sustainable, professional and internationally recognizable Hotel product or Garni hotel as limited service hotel product in
Europe.
