Not all components will need forecasts based on a factored estimate, and the project team and the building owner should agree on which components are to be assessed on the basis of their criticality in use and cost of the building (ISO 2011). Superstructure is selected as the building subcomponent for modeling deterioration for two reasons: (1) superstructure is the most critical component in the building hierarchy used by the council, and (2) among the available building inspection data, superstructure has the richest data set. As a population and also as subsets for each influencing factor, the superstructure data sets were statistically reliable for validation. The study used two data sets. One data set with 237 data points was used for model calibration. The other set of inspection data from the inspection conducted after 4 years with 338 data points was used for model validation.
