Antibacterial properties of the fabrics were evaluated against Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria, according to AATCC 100-2006 standard method. As expected, no reduction of E. coli and S. aureus colonies was found on the pristine fabric. On the contrary, there was even an increase in the number of bacteria recovered from the inoculated pristine sample after 24 h of incubation in comparison to “zero” contact time, indicating that bacteria can use pure cotton as a substrate ( Yazdanshenas and Shateri-Khalilabad, 2012a and Yazdanshenas and Shateri-Khalilabad, 2012b). From the obtained results, it was determined that the AgNWs-loaded fabric can kill 100% of both E. coli and S. aureus bacteria, indicating that the fabric is very effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The excellent antibacterial activity of the fabric could be attributed to its high surface coating with AgNWs.
