By the winter of 1994, Toyota’s upper management had already created a hybrid technology design team and applied enormous pressure for rapid results on a truly hybrid, compact car design that would provide such fuel efficiency that it would leave competitors in the dust. The design team responsible for implementing this new technology faced several challenges including a lack of expertise in hybrid technology, a lack of manufacturing infrastructure to create hybrid technology, the necessity to completely redesign the internal components of existing compact cars to allow added space for hybrid components, and constant computer glitches when attempting to regulate the flow of energy between the gasoline and electric systems. In essence, Toyota’s upper management wanted this revolutionary car design operational within a year of the formation of the engineering team so that it could be displayed ahead of the competition at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show.
