Water pollution results from industrial and municipal releases of pollutants in to waterways. Many people in the developing world do not have access to a safe drinking water source or sanitary facilities. When untreated human wastes contaminate water, disease organisms are easily spread from person to person. Diarrhea that results from contaminated drinking water causes dehydration and malnutrition and leads to nearly 2 million deaths per year. The majority of deaths occur in children.
