She heard his quick steps closing in.
“Shin Hye-ssi.”
Shin Hye didn’t stop but inadvertently slowed down, allowing him to catch up. When he appeared beside her, she looked down without breaking stride, and pretended to look at the road. Her long hair falling like a curtain to hide her face.
“Your girlfriend called?” she asked softly.
The question must have caught him offguard because it took a moment before he replied.
“Eo.”
They fell back into a slow, quiet pace. She could only see his long legs and his shoes, how he was walking a step late behind her.
Around them, the crickets were chirping, the leaves swayed and rustled softly. The moon shone down on them in between the thick foliage of the trees. It was a calm night, nothing awkward or strange.
She could finally see the villa when he suddenly stopped walking.
“Shin Hye-ssi, can—”
“She seems nice.”
Her steps faltered and she stood a few feet away from him, in a spot where the brightness of the moon failed to reach. Her face was hidden in the shadows when she turned around and faced him.
“Your Ye Won-ah.”
Shin Hye watched with a heavy heart as his shoulders slumped and his gaze dropped on the road.
“Yes, she is.”
Some lines shouldn’t be crossed.
