A national survey of prenatal screening in Israel pointed out that in Israel prenatal screening and genetic tests rate are the highest in the world, and that they were more common among Jewish women from a high socioeconomic group (Romano- Zelekha and Shohat, 2012). These high prenatal screening rates might explain the high prevalence rates at birth of congenital
heart defects observed in our study. In a recent literature review and meta-analysis showed that the prevalence rate of the total congenital heart defects at birth in upper-middle income countries was significantly higher than in lower-middle-income countries (van der Linde et al., 2011).
