The man would become the Buddha was born around 563 BCE as a prince of the warrior caste (kshatriya) in Kapilavastu, a site in the Shakya kingdom near the Indian Himalayas.
At the time of Siddhartha’s birth, his father the king, consulted a royal astrologer, who forecast that the boy would become either a world ruler or chakravartin or a Buddha, or awakened ascetic.
The boy was given the name Siddhartha, which means the One Who Attains His Goal (in reference to the astrologer’s forecast).
