The survey results suggest that transport price factors are evaluated as more important than other transport selection criteria by a high proportion of Norwegian exporters. The paper suggests that this may be explained by the significantly higher transpo rt costs in Norway. The higher costs can be partially explained by factors such as topography, location, transport distances and limited domestic competition. Norway also has a high proportion of exports of raw materials which are more likely to be sensitive to transport cost. The survey shows that even for exporters with products with a high value-to- weight ratio, only about 50 per cent of them rate timing factors as more important than transport price factors. Nevertheless, for a country which is highly exp o rt-de p endent and in a location which is p eripheral to majo r markets, there is a case for further investigation of the relatively low emphasis given to timing, service and control factors. It may be in the interests of carriers and freight forwarders, who are frequently used, to promote or develop value- added logistical services which could assist Norwegian exporters.
