Do you get an exposure at all? If so, what does the image look like? Do you hear the mirror going up and the shutter releasing? Check the aperture stop-down lever in the lens mount and on the lens itself.
Try removing and reattaching the lens. Is the lens properly recognised? If not try cleaning the contacts.
If that doesn't work, try performing a reset to factory defaults. If that doesn't work, try removing the battery for a few days. If that doesn't work, call Sony.

I only get a blank BLACK image out of reviewing the captured image. I think I only hear the mirror going up but the shutter isn't releasing.

Can you remove the lens and then place the camera into sensor cleaning mode? The mirror should go up and the shutter should open. If that doesn't happen then something is definitely wrong.

First remove the battery and leave it out for a minute or so. That used to cure my A100.

I tried removing the battery, that didn't work.
I also tried the sensor cleaning mode, the same "Camera Error" message appeared.
Now, I am so much in trouble 'coz I have lots of Wedding Coverage Bookings this May. I guess I have to hire 3rd party photographers to fill in my place but no other Sony Alpha users for Hire here, only I.
I am so alone here in Dipolog City, Philippines.

Doesn't it give you an error code?, didn't think it just said "camera error".

Surely if you're taking bookings for weddings you should have a back up camera anyway?
If it's still under warranty I'd send it off to Sony.

Why does the third-party photographer have to be shooting with an Alpha? Also, can you maybe rent a body? The last option is to go buy a new body and send the faulty one off to Sony. When you get it back repaired then you will have two bodies which will help you out the next time something like this happens. As has been mentioned, if you're deriving income from your photography, it's wise to have a backup body.

I totally had that happen! It proved to be my Minolta 50mm lens was faulty. I had sent in my A700 under warranty and it did it again...right away I took the lens off and tried it on my A100. After about 50, 60 shots I got the black image/camera error thing. I bought a new Sony 50mm and everything is working fine so I think it was something electrical on the lens! I have another Minolta 50mm that works fine but my daughter uses it on her film shoots.

camera error - system error on some other brands means mostlikely shutter damage ( if showing with any lens attached).
how many clicks you have done?

I had a simlar thing happen with my Dynax 7D, the linkage between the shutter button and the mirror was jarred and would not work. This happened because of a slight bump when I put the camera onto the front seat of my car. Made me much more careful in handling the 7D afterwards. It was repaired in a general overhaul that cost me around $200 worth thinking about if the guarantee has run out. They do things like that but charge extra if they have to use any parts as well as checking the rest of the camera.

I tried, taking off the battery, changing lens with my 75-300, still the problem is there. I guess the contacts are okay because I can still look through the Live View Mode as well as the Viewfinder whenever I turn off the LV. I also get a weird sound like the shutter ain't closing or it's kind of a s
