I was very nervous when I knocked on the dark wooden door of the manager’s office. I’d been working for the company for three years, and had never spoken to the manager. But now I had to speak to him. The other day, I’d seen a new car that I must have. It was a dream car, but very expensive. That was why I was going to see the manager; to ask for a raise in salary. When he said ‘enter’, I walked straight in and looked him in the eye. In a strong voice I asked him for a thirty percent raise, and in a much stronger voice he told me that it was out of the question. The car will remain a dream.
Many Thai people, especially children, love to say “Oh my god!” in English, perhaps because they heard it on the radio or in the movies. This is a very impolite thing to say, and might make Christian people offended. Another is to say the name “Jesus” when you are angry or surprised. This is impolite because they are the names “Oh my gosh!” or “Oh golly!” Instead of “Jesus” you can say “Gee!” or “Gee whiz!” These are much more polite, and won’t offend anyone
