've been on quite a few great beach holidays but my absolute favourite was the week I spent at Jolly Beach Resort Antigua. About 15 of us went for a friend’s wedding and the ages ranged from 7 to 70. I have so many wonderful memories of this place least of all the wedding.
The resort was spotless, the staff were always happy, smiling and singing. Ready to help if they could and the choices and quality of meals offered were second to none. Food and drink were never far from our reach at any time.
The resort opens on to a beautiful cove of white sand and turquoise waters. The calm sea is shallow enough for a paddling and a quick dip. However, at the other end of the beach the resort also supplies snorkels, Kayaks, wind surf boards and catamarans. In the warm water of the Caribbean these sports were great fun and I didn’t find getting soaked at all unpleasant. We also hired some jet ski's one day and I still chuckle when I remember the 70 year old father of the groom flying past on a jet ski wearing a swimming cap, Speedos and a manic grin! He really showed us how to live life to the MAX.
I never wore a watch the whole time. Every day was spent on the private beach, underneath the palm trees or building sand castles. At the beach there were a few amenities such as a local Masseur with knowledge of herbal medicine. Days were spent relaxing with a Bahamas Mama and a basket of Piri Piri Chicken, playing cards or just talking and laughing. In the evening we would all get dressed up and meet for a superb meal in one of their restaurants, afterwards heading to the bar for more cocktails and cigars.
One evening we decided to go to a BBQ event at Shirley heights that overlooks English Harbour- a truly breath taking scene. I can't tell you much about the food but I can say the rum was VERY strong and the reggae music was excellent.
Now days, if I am ever in a stressful situation (like the dentists chair) this is the happy place I go to. I remember the smells of the tropical flowers, the beach, the sound of the sea washing against the beautiful pure white sand and the feeling of the warm sun on my skin. BLISS!!
As for the wedding- I had been quite dubious about wedding ceremonies up to that point and was adamant I was never going to join that club but as I watched my two friends own relaxed, joyful ceremony in the beautiful surroundings I realised that marriage didn’t have to be a solemn, stuffy occasion. I am now happily married myself and plan to take my husband sometime so that he can experience what I consider to be the closest place to paradise.
