The funds will go to four different bodies: the City of Sofia, Urban Mobility Centre Ltd., Sofia Electric Transport Company JSC and Metropolitan JSC.
Two loans were finalised in early August. The first, amounting to EUR 5.96 million, will go to the city administration to help improve different aspects of its transport system, including traffic intersections, trolleybus services and tram lines. These will be part of the European Union’s grant-funded Integrated Urban Transport Project. This project seeks to introduce intelligent traffic management systems and real-time passenger information services.
The second loan, amounting to EUR 7 million, will go to Urban Mobility Center Ltd. for enhanced efficiency measures, including implementation of e-ticketing systems on public transport. It will also be used to strengthen the tariff policy to improve transparency in the organisation and to improve its financial performance.
Two further loans, worth up to EUR 6 million each, will be given to Sofia Electric Transport Company JSC, which operates trams and trolleybuses, and the Metropolitan JSC, which operates the metro system.
