LAUREL -
Update 3:32 pm: Sheriff Mike Linder said Friday that around 1 a.m. Friday morning firefighters located what appeared to be a body at the scene of the Indian Gulch Wildfire burning northwest of Laurel.
Linder said they believe the body was male. However, it was burned so badly that the individual could not be positively identified. The body was located near, what's believed to be, the starting origin of the fire.
"They believe it's probably in the area where the fire started. We sent investigators out to the scene and they were able to conduct their investigation and determine that it is in fact an individual that had been badly burned in the fire beyond recognition so we don't have an identification yet," said Linder.
Officials say they have an idea of who the individual may be, but an autopsy will have to positively identify the body before they can speculate.
"We do have information about a person that hasn't been seen. We do have a presumption of who this might be," said Linder.
At this time foul play is not likely, but has not been completely ruled out.
"Right now the investigators that were out there didn't see any actual signs of foul play so we are not really looking that direction. It will be completely investigated," said Linder.
Investigators have not confirmed a link between the start of the fire and the body.
That will be part of the investigation, we would be making assumptions to say if it was tied, but hopefully we will be able to determined that as the investigation continues
