When fattening pigs in the dehesa, acorns are the most
limiting resource during the montanera, because unlike grass,
their supply is not continually renewed. Therefore the
stocking rate for the montanera season is based on estimates
of the acorn production (Rodríguez-Estévez et al., 2007a,
2008a). The feed conversion rate (FCR) of the acorns is a very
important aspect of the sustained use of the dehesa. Based on
estimates, different authors suggest FCRs fluctuating between
8 and 12 kg of acorns (Montoya, 1993).
