These farmers however agreed that, when land has been fallowed for a number of years, burning at least for the first season cannot be avoided, as it facilitates clear access. An emerging trend in land preparation and weed control is the adoption of minimum tillage practices especially during the minor season. About a fifth of respondents (18.5%) use herbicides mainly (paraquat and glyphosate) to spray weeds on their lands and plant through the dead plant materials without tilling the land. According to the farmers, the organic material decomposes and enriches the soil. They rightly explained that this is a variation of the ‘prɔka’ system. About 80% of all farmers interviewed claim they do not burn crop residues but leave them on their farms as in-situ mulch. Farmers use a technique whereby previous seasons maize stalks remain on the field as guides for new seasons planting.
