Enlightened thinkers also began to question the nature of region which had been taught by the church for centuries. Many believed in a new religious philosophy called deism. Deists believe that God does exist and had created the conditions for all existence to occur, but no longer played an active role in human events on Earth. They certainly questioned whether everything in the bible could be believed literally. Deists often came into conflict with organized religion which they claimed exploited peoples' ignorance and Superstition.
