Multivariate analyses performed in this study showed differences
between tissues, which may be due to anatomical and physiological
differences. Except for CAT, the activity of all the antioxidant defenses
in mako sharks contributed to explain the total variance of the data
and to identify patterns between organisms and related to the sampled
tissue. The levels of Hg and Cd, together with the activity of
SOD and the concentration of TBARS, were the predictors that contributed,
with statistical significance, to discriminate those patterns.
The kidney and liver were characterized by having higher Cd concentration,
higher SOD and GR activity, and higher TBARS and protein
carbonyl levels as compared to the muscle.
