Drivers’ inability to maintain a proper lane position because of inattention, fatigue, or drowsiness is one of the main
causes of accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated that, in the U.S.
in 2005, about 28% of traffic accidents that resulted in death were due to crashes that involved Running-off-
Roadways (ROR) crashes (1). Clearly, fatigue and drowsiness can lead to the deterioration of the driver’s
performance, and this can cause various errors and increase the risk of accidents.
