A distinct enhancement in Carbamazepine release was obtained on in vitro drug release testing of cocrystals as compared to its physical mixture with Itaconic acid and plain Carbamazepine. (Figure:3) The increase in drug release can be attributed to formation of hydrogen bonding between amide functional group and carboxylic acid functional group of Itaconic acid. The presence of Itaconic acid in association with Carbamazepine leads to an enhancement in polarity of hydrophobic carbamazepine thus increasing its dissolution in aqueous media.
