Concept Analysis
Concept analysis is an approach used to clarify and
define concepts in a common language to those of interest.
Walker and Avant's (2005, p. 65) method of concept
analysis has been selected to analyze the concept of pediatric
palliative care. The steps of the process include the
following: (1) identification of all usages of the concept
pediatric palliative care; (2) determination of the defining
attributes of pediatric palliative care; (3) identification of a
model case, a genuine exemplar displaying the defining
attributes of the concept of pediatric palliative care; (4)
examination of additional cases that are not the same but
similar to the concept of interest or contrary cases to
determine which defining attributes have the best “fit”
(Walker & Avant, 2005, p. 70); (5) identification of
antecedents and consequences of pediatric palliative care;
(6) determination of empirical referents for the defining
attributes of pediatric palliative care. The analysis will
conclude with a proposed theoretical definition of pediatric
palliative care for pediatric nursing practice.
