Empirical studies in software engineering are employed to explore, describe and explain
the phenomenon. The empirical evidence of empirical studies allows researchers to validate the
theories, to identify important factors, and to build models [Basili, 2007]. There are various types
of empirical studies. The researchers have to choose the proper method to accomplish the research
goal. The three most common empirical strategies used are controlled experiments, case studies,
and survey [Montgomery, 2006; Robson, 2002; Yin, 2002]. We briefly present each strategy as
following:
