One idea for avoiding expensive fitness evaluations is to use fitness approximation via an approximate model [10]. Our approach avoids fitness evaluations in a very different fashion, taking advantage of a feature of our particular problem domain. When we calculate the weight of a structure in order to decide whether we want to invest the computational effort required to evaluate the validity of the structure, the weight is a component of the overall fitness, not an approximation of the overall fitness.
