Patient Characteristics
As shown in Table 1, the overall mean age of the
patients was 65 years. Mean ages across individual studies
ranged from 42 to 75 years. Three studies focused on elderly
persons, enrolling only patients older than 65 years
(23, 41) or 60 years (17). Seventy-five percent of patients
were men (range in studies, 43% to 98%). Race or ethnicity
was reported only in the 2 U.S. studies; 8% of patients
were not white in one study (24), and 33% were not white
in the other (23).
