Dissolved oxygen, salinity, and temperature, were recorded onsite at the upstream and downstream points using a YSI 55 hand-held meter (YSI Inc., Yellow Springs, Ohio). Samples were collected2–3 m directly outside the facility. Water samples (500 ml) werecollected at each sampling point. Downstream samples were col-lected first, followed by upstream samples. The collected sampleswere placed on ice and vacuum filtered through glass fiber filters(Whatman GF/F) upon return to the lab. When there was approxi-mately 10 ml of sample still to be filtered, already filtered water wasremoved and either frozen for analysis at a later date, or immedi-ately analyzed for TAN, NO3−–N, NO2−–N, and RP using techniquesdescribed below. Two drops of 1% MgCO3suspension were added tothe water remaining in the filter so that the filters could be assessedfor Chl-a concentration.
