The text of the United Nations (UN) resolution declaring 2011 as an International Year of Chemistry (IYC) was presented under the UN Sustainable Development Agenda, and recognized that humankind’s understanding of the material nature of our world is grounded, in particular, in our knowledge of chemistry. The resolution stressed that education in chemistry and public understanding of the role of chemistry is critical in addressing challenges such as global climate change, in providing sustainable sources of clean water, food, and energy and in maintaining a wholesome environment for the well-being of all people. Resonant with that theme, this IYC-2011 legacy project created resources for global dissemination to support e orts to improve climate literacy while making overt connections between sustainability and conceptual
understanding of chemistry.
