When children seem interested and persistent in writing their name and forming letters, adults should offer assistance, both formal and informal. Inviting 3- and 4-year-olds to explore writing their names and accepting children's attempts at approximations of letters recognize their growing skills (IRA & NAEYC 1998). Daily writing activities, such as a sign-in sheet, and exposure to the many purposes of writing help build their understanding of the power of the written word, while respecting their as yet undeveloped fine motor control for precise letter formation.
