The etiology of ischemic stroke in young adults and adolescents
is diverse and varies according to age and geographic
region. In the past 10 years, there have been many published
series of stroke etiology in young patients, and Table 1 summarizes
these reports. The TOAST (Trial of Org 10172 in
Acute Stroke Treatment) criteria for classification of acute
ischemic stroke are the most commonly used.25
