Information technology is a key element in
logistic chain integration, but, as Turner (1993)
stresses, true logistic integration is only possible
when the right kind of information technology is
used in combination with significant process reengineering.
In the past, enterprises have focused
too much on the automation of existing processes
and practices and on the use of information systems
like order processing, EDI and bar coding.
These 'transaction systems' are important, especially
for reporting on the current status of an
enterprise, but they give very little insight into the
overall business operations. According to Turner,
the kind of information technology that is really
needed for logistic chain integration consists of
planning and decision support tools that are able
to support the company's operational planning
and decision-making process on an integrated
enterprise-wide basis.
