One of the greatest contributors to the costs of repair to infrastructure
and construction distress is damage to structures and pavements
caused by heaving of expansive soils. Typical damage
includes cracking of slabs, floor heave, foundation heave, lateral
movement of foundations and structures, sticking doors or doors
that do not close, sticking or breaking of windows, cracking of
walls, and heave of roadways or slabs. Some of these types of
damage also pose severe safety issues. Overstressing of beams, columns,
and structural connections due to differential movement
caused by heaving soil can exacerbate damage due to other forces
such as wind loads or earthquakes. Sticking doors and windows
may block egress in case of fire. Cracked slabs and differential
movement pose trip hazards. Cracked floors and walls provide
access points for insects and other unwanted pests. Differential
movement can also cause leaks in gas or sewer lines.
Four case histories have been taken from the authors’ files
that illustrate the types of distress caused by heave associated with
slabs, piers, and footings. This paper presents case histories that
relate to the following nature or cause of distress:
