Lesson ADT 89
Task: Blow and wipe nose.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, ADT 3, SEN 12, SEN 13, COG 11
Concept: Full independence in this task can be difficult, as reminders are sometimes necessary even after skill mastery has been obtained. This is why the objective stops at the verbal prompting level. Independence should be encouraged, however. Three ma-jot concepts are involved: grasping the tissue, placing the tissue and blowing, and wiping the nose and disposing of the tissue.
Behavioral Objective: Using a disposable tissue, the student will, upon prompting, blow his or her nose and dispose of the tissue to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: A variety of tissues designed for this purpose, cottonballs, and paper.
Task Analysis:
1. Using the paper and cottonballs, set up a game where the student attempts to move the cottonballs across the paper using only air from his or her nose. Draw a line to mark the farthest success and attempt to improve this until it is perceived that significant air expulsion from the nose is obtained.
2. Assist the student in obtaining a (or a few) tissue(s) from a container or box.
3. Continue Step 2, adding a game to practice throwing away a tissue after it has been crumpled up.
4. Using the skills from Steps 1 through 3, verbally guide the student through the action of blowing and or wiping the nose, even if the action is not needed at that time.
5. Modify Step 4 to only requesting performance of the act when necessary.
6. Modify the request action of Step 5 to "What do you need to do now?" while gesturing toward the nose. Add the concept of disposing of the tissue.
7. Although Step 6 will technically meet the objective, delay prompting to at-tempt to get independent behavior; when successful, reward intensely with verbal praise.
